After an Under Arm Wax: 48-Hour Care & What to Avoid (Laser Waxing Tips)
By Vanity Private Studio | July 10, 2026
Most important rule: for the first 48 hours, keep your underarms clean and dry, and don’t add extra heat or friction. That’s the biggest difference between “smooth and calm” and “why is this irritated?”

We hear it all the time: “Amazing place, and Liz’s waxing service was excellent!” Now let’s keep it that way after you leave our Magnolia Park studio in Burbank. In the first 48 hours after an under arm wax, skip deodorant for at least 24 hours, avoid heavy sweating and hot showers for 24 to 48 hours, wear loose clothing, and calm any redness with a cool compress plus a fragrance-free soothing gel. Our Under Arm Wax is quick, 15 minutes, starting at $25, and we finish with a soothing serum and ingrown-care as needed. Your aftercare is what protects that smooth result.
0 to 24 hours after underarm waxing: keep it cool, keep it clean
Right after waxing, your hair follicles are open and your skin is extra reactive. In Burbank, heat is the sneaky issue, especially during our warm, dry summers. We generally recommend you treat the area like it’s “fresh” for the rest of the day.
Do this
- Rinse with cool to lukewarm water only. Hot showers can kick up redness fast.
- Pat dry, don’t rub. Rubbing is basically friction plus heat.
- If you feel stinging or heat, use a cool compress for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Use a fragrance-free soothing gel if you need it. Aloe or chamomile gels are usually the safest.
Avoid this
- Deodorant or antiperspirant for at least 24 hours. Most formulas are loaded with fragrance, alcohol, or salts that can sting.
- Workouts, saunas, steam rooms, and anything that makes you sweat a lot.
- Body oils, perfumes, and “freshening sprays” in the underarm area.
- Tight tops that trap heat. Go loose and breathable.
Magnolia Park tip: If you’re heading toward Magnolia Boulevard after your appointment, keep errands short and shaded. Sun and heat plus freshly waxed skin is a combo we try to avoid.
24 to 48 hours: your “no drama” window for sweat, heat, and friction
Day two is where most irritation happens. Your skin usually feels fine, so it’s tempting to jump back into spin class, a hot shower, or a long commute in a tight top. Give it a little more time. If you work in entertainment or media and need predictable, camera-ready skin, this is the window that keeps things calm.
We generally recommend avoiding intense workouts and saunas through the full 48 hours. If you have to move, keep it light and keep the underarms as dry as possible. Once you’re past 24 hours, some people do fine with a gentle, fragrance-free deodorant, but if you’re prone to bumps or stinging, waiting closer to 48 hours tends to be kinder to your skin.
If you notice bumps starting
Don’t pick. Don’t scrub. Start with cool compresses and keep product simple. A lot of bumps calm down when you remove heat and friction for a day.
48 to 7 days: exfoliation timing that prevents ingrowns (without overdoing it)
After 48 to 72 hours, you can start gentle exfoliation to help prevent ingrown hairs. The key word is gentle. Underarms are thin skin, plus you’ve got constant movement and rubbing, so aggressive scrubs usually backfire.
Keep cleansing simple, too. A mild, fragrance-free cleanser is enough. If you’re one of our sensitive-skin people, you already know this drill. As one client put it, Liz has “time and time again tailored all my treatments to what it needs” and that same mindset applies to aftercare. Your underarms don’t need a 10-step routine. They need calm.
Quick timing guide: 0 to 48 hours equals cool, dry, minimal product. 48 to 72 hours equals start gentle exfoliation. Ongoing equals moisturize lightly and avoid picking at new growth.

Products and habits we actually see help after an Under Arm Wax
At Vanity Private Studio, every waxing service includes a soothing serum. If you’re building a simple routine at home, think in categories, not hype.
Soothe
Fragrance-free aloe or chamomile gel, or a plain, gentle moisturizer. Skip alcohol-based toners and strongly fragranced creams for the first day.
Prevent ingrowns
Start gentle exfoliation after 48 to 72 hours. A soft washcloth in the shower often does the job. If you’re prone to ingrowns, ask us what ingrown-care makes sense for your skin.
Reduce friction
Loose, breathable fabric for the first couple days. It matters more than most people think, especially if you’re commuting along the US-101 corridor and sitting in warm cars.
If ingrowns are your main issue, bookmark our guide on ingrown hairs after an under arm wax. It’s the fastest way to troubleshoot what’s actually causing them.
When to reach out to us (and when it’s just normal post-wax skin)
A little redness, mild tenderness, and tiny bumps right after waxing can be normal, especially if you’re sensitive. It usually settles quickly when you keep things cool and product-light. And yes, we take comfort seriously. One long-time client said Liz makes “the entire waxing experience comfortable and as pain free as possible, ” and that same care continues after you leave.
Reach out if you notice any of these
- Persistent swelling after 48 hours
- Increasing pain instead of improvement
- Pus, fever, or a widespread rash
